NFC

NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a communication technology that enables transfer of information between devices. It is basically a short range communication technology and is usually used for transferring small amount of information. It is evolved from RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).

The device enabled with NFC may be active or passive. Active NFC devices are the devices which can read as well as write. (e.g. a smartphone). Passive devices are the devices which contain information that can be read by an Active device. (e.g. a smartcard, a NFC tag etc.) .

NFC devices are power efficient. A NFC tag or a smartcard are NFC devices which do not require a battery.

NFC is used in various fields like payment systems where payment can be done by just bringing two NFC devices near to each other or in a data transfer systems where music, pictures, videos and documents can be transferred easily as compared to any other technology where we need to do the manual setup before the data is actually transferred.

NFC tags can be programmed in such a way so that they perform a pre-defined task. They can be easily programmed using a NFC enabled smartphone and some programming skills. NFC tags in form of stickers are also available at a very low cost.

NFC is a secured technology as encryption of data is available and is easy to use. Security can be further increased by adding a password to the smartphones.
